Back o The Shop Gallery Image

Welcome to the Back o' The Shop Gallery and Cafe Terrington.

After extensive alterations and improvements to the Backotheshop, we reopen on Saturday 13th June with an exhibition by Shelley Hughes, one of Yorkshire’s finest up and coming young portrait artists.

Born in Scarborough, but having spent her formative years in the village of Terrington, it is fitting that she should return to the Backotheshop gallery in Terrington for her first solo exhibition in North Yorkshire. Shelley attended Terrington village school and Malton Comprehensive before embarking on a fine art degree at Lancaster University, which she enjoyed so much that she stayed on an extra year to complete a Masters degree. Since leaving university Shelley moved to Sheffield and began working in the field of arts education with Museums Sheffield which led her into community engagement and outreach work in and around Sheffield. She combines this work with her own practice, which is often informed by the outreach work that she does.

Shelley is often available for commission work and also as a private tutor.

The exhibition, Insights and Stereotypes is based on themes of socially constructed identity.

“My current practice centres around ideas of socially constructed identities and stereotypes. My drawings and paintings present these themes for discussion.

My inspiration comes primarily from the media, newspapers, magazines, advertisements and news reports.

I am interested in the contrasts between self perception, stereotype and identity as constructed by outside elements (such as tabloid newspaper reports) and how this is reflected back into society, both on a personal individual scale and as part of a National identity.

My interests in this subject area also stem from the community outreach work that I do on some of the estates in Sheffield where I live. Some of my models are the kids that I work with.

In this body of work I am not attempting to pass judgement on any particular social group, but merely to provoke reactions, thoughts and discussions on this idea of labelling and identifying through visual standards most often set by others”.

The exhibition starts on Saturday 13th June and runs until Saturday 4th July. We would like to thank the EU, Yorkshire Forward and York Business Link for the their financial support and encouragement during our improvement project.

The Gallery is open 10.00 – 16.00 Tuesday to Saturday.
