Back o The Shop Gallery Image

Welcome to the Back o' The Shop Gallery and Cafe Terrington.

The September exhibition at the Backotheshop Art Cafe features the work of Brandsby photographer John Illingworth under the title of "Diversity".

John Illingworth, LRPS, was introduced to photography when he was given a Kodak Instamatic camera at the age of 14. Later, as part of his employment as a Scene of Crime Officer, he was formally trained in evidential photography. However, it was the creative use of photography that took his passion, now, many years later, whilst the camera is digital, that basic passion still remains. "First I take a photograph – then I create a picture" is how he describes his workflow process, indicating that, after pressing the shutter button, the creation of the final picture has only just begun.

John began exhibiting fine art photographs in South West France, where he has lived for much of the past 10 years. There he found inspiration in photographing old and abandoned dwellings. Details such as broken doors, peeling shutters and smashed windows, inviting the viewer to imagine who and what went before. Landscapes, Cityscapes and natural history also feature prominently in John's work.

Back in the UK, John has continued to develop his work and became a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society earlier this year. He has recently turned his attention to photographing local musicians, as they perform and trying to capture something of the beauty of their instruments. John has also recently completed the pictures for a new CD released in the last couple of months by prominent York blues musician David Ward Maclean. "How am I different from other photographers? I sell my pictures only once. I do not do limited editions or other long print runs. Each picture is an original and is as unique as any painting".

The exhibition at the Back o' the Shop Gallery at Terrington called “Diversity” shows the wide range of subjects photographed by John and the differing ways that those subjects are presented to the viewer.

The exhibition runs from Tuesday 28th August until Saturday 23rd September.

Backotheshop is also very happy to be part of the very first Ryedale Artfest, which is an exciting new showcase for Ryedale’s artistic talent. A host of artists, craftworkers, galleries and studios will be holding exhibitions and displays across the district over three weeks between 24th September and 15th October 2010. Exhibitions will feature new work on show and for sale in the artists' own studios and at high-quality galleries. At the Backotheshop we are pleased to be featuring the work of Ryedale artists June Emerson, Elisabeth Bailey and Janet Hayton. For more information please have a look at the Artfest website or pick up a leaflet from the areas TIC’s and other supporting outlets.
